The Integrative and Functional Nutrition Academy

For those of you with interests in Integrative and Functional Nutrition (IFN), a fantastic resource has just been launched and I'm privileged to be a part of the advisory board.  Sheila Dean, a long-term friend, mentor and colleague has launched The Integrative and Functional Nutrition Academy (IFN).  Here's an overview of the mission statement of the academy, along with a link to the advisory board and website.   "IFN training includes skill-building in key clinical areas including: nutrition-focused physical assessment, conventional and functional labs and diagnostics including nutrigenetic testing, mind-body modalities such as meditation, yoga, breathing techniques, art and science of dietary supplements and other lifestyle-oriented practices. A “whole food as medicine” approach is central to IFN therapy, thus an understanding and application of culinary nutrition concepts, condition-specific healing foods and bioactive compounds in the “food farmacy” will also be included".   http://www.ifnacademy.com/meet-the-experts/ifna-advisory-board/ Till next time, Ashleigh Gass Brilliant Fitness and Nutrition, INC. www.brilliantfitnessandnutrition.com www.brilliantathlete.com MS, CCN, CSCS, CISSN, Pn1 Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist Medical Exercise Specialist Certified...

Rebuttal to recent general media articles “Skip the Supplements” and “Herbal Supplements Are Often Not What They Seem”.

Ashleigh Gass, MS, CSCS, CISSN, CCN, CNS. Recent media articles “Skip the Supplements” and “Herbal Supplements Are Often Not What They Seem” caught my attention and inspired this rebuttal. Even though some of the information presented in these articles was correct, we weren’t given any information about the other side of the story. This is significant - because the other side of the story would have given consumers an opportunity to learn about hundreds of excellent nutritional supplement companies and their respective products. Yet again, the general public was left flapping in the breeze of misleading, incomplete nutrition articles geared towards “poo-poo-ing” the nutritional supplement industry. Perhaps these articles were written with the intention to “protect” the public from purchasing supplements from certain companies, or to discourage people from taking nutritional supplements in general. If the former is correct, the articles would have had far greater value if they’d pointed out the many companies following stringent manufacturing practices. If the latter is correct and the articles were written to...

Ashleigh Gass: Featured Expert Profile

The physical and mental transformation that occurs during preparation for a figure or bodybuilding show is challenging and very interesting. While stepping on stage may not be an appropriate goal for everyone, certain aspects of the preparation process can certainly benefit most. Whether aspiring to have a figure athlete’s physique or simply a leaner and healthier body, following PN guidelines in all stages of training is one of the keys to achieving both. Building and preparing a stage-ready body is one thing. Managing yourself afterwards is quite another. What happens after the show, or once the transformation is complete? The lifestyle of a physique athlete off-season is somewhat of a mystery. The only pictures we see are those from competition day or from the photo shoots, and too often we hear the stories of the post-show binges and rebounds that commonly occur. Ashleigh Gass, a certified strength and conditioning coach and Precision Nutrition Network provider, knows this story all too well. A decade ago, when she was competing in...
